BTS leader and rapper RM reflected on receiving a diss from another rapper early in his career, describing it as a universal experience that everyone must endure at some point in their lives.
In their memoir “Beyond the Story: 10-Year Record of BTS,” co-written by journalist Myeongseok Kang, the members of BTS discussed their journey from prior to their 2013 debut to the present day. RM, also known as Kim Nam-joon, shared an incident involving B-Free, a rapper who criticized him and fellow BTS member Suga for transitioning from the hip-hop scene to become idols.
Recalling the insult, RM explained that it taught him how to handle unexpected criticism, and he chose to use the term “insult” instead of the Korean word “moyok,” as per the translator’s note.
The B-Free incident, which occurred early in BTS’s career shortly after their debut, is well-known within the BTS fandom. During an episode of the podcast “Kim Bong-hyun’s Hip-Hop Invitational” in November 2013, B-Free, whose real name is Choi Sung-ho, admitted to not having listened to BTS’s music. He mocked their appearance as idols and alleged that they prioritized money over pursuing careers as rappers. B-Free also criticized BTS for incorporating elements from Kanye West’s track “Black Skinhead” in their concept trailer for the EP “O!RUL8,2?”
In 2016, B-Free apologized for his derogatory comments towards BTS, expressing regret for going too far. He acknowledged that attacking them was wrong and recognized the importance of respecting others’ choices. In 2019, he issued another apology, expressing sorrow for the emotional pain he caused BTS and their fans.
Reflecting on the incident, RM regarded it as an inevitable part of their journey, something that everyone goes through in life.
