Rising prices making childhood hobbies unaffordable

The union’s website has justified a 5.25% wage increase for its tutors, stating that it is reasonable and manageable for its members. This comes as inflation is projected to slow down in the second half of the year. However, parents are dealing with inflation-busting price hikes in other areas.

For instance, Berkshire Riding Centre, which charges adult prices for children over 10, will be raising its prices starting from August 1. A child’s private 45-minute ride on the weekend will now cost £85, with an additional £5 fee for a lesson. This is a 13% increase from the previous price of £75. The center attributes this rise to significant increases in the cost of feed.

To support struggling riding schools, The British Horse Society has provided over £1 million through its grant scheme. Sarah Phillips, the Chief Operating Officer at The British Horse Society, expressed concern over the impact on riding schools, livery yards, and those involved in equestrianism. Since 2018, 250 riding schools have closed across the UK. Phillips emphasized the importance of protecting and nurturing horses, the sport, and the unique bond between horses and humans, especially during difficult times.

In addition, the cost of swimming lessons has increased due to the rising expenses of heating pools. Brio Leisure, which operates 10 centers in and around Chester, introduced a 50p admission fee for children under the age of three in January. The decision was driven by the rising cost of pool chemicals. Meanwhile, Go! Active, a swimming pool in Clowne, Derbyshire, raised its lesson prices from £20 to £25 in April. However, they claim that their prices still remain competitive within the region.
