Rishi Sunak Advocates for Motorists, Initiates Review of Anti-Car Schemes

However, he harbors concerns about the increasing popularity of car schemes such as Low Traffic Neighborhoods (LTNs) that aim to reduce traffic in residential areas and cut carbon emissions as a response to the Covid pandemic.

These zones, originally introduced by Mr. Khan in London, have been rolled out to other places like Oxford, Bristol, Manchester, Birmingham, and Sheffield with funding from the DfT.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper recently announced the end of government funding for projects that “ban cars or make it difficult for motorists,” suggesting that local authorities should reconsider existing LTNs that were implemented without sufficient consultation of local residents if they are unpopular.

However, a review commissioned by Mr. Sunak could lead to government intervention to halt current schemes. This could involve issuing guidance to councils, advising them to scrap LTNs that lack local support.

“The Prime Minister is particularly concerned about LTNs that only allow vehicles no wider than a bike to pass through, which hinder delivery vans, cars for the elderly and families, and occasionally emergency vehicles,” a source said.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, 42 parliamentarians, including former ministers Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg, David Davis, and Esther McVey, as well as Red Wall MPs Lia Nici and Marco Longhi, warn that the 2030 ban on the sale of petrol cars will have a detrimental impact on the economy. The letter was organized by the Net Zero Scrutiny Group, led by Craig Mackinlay, and Conservative Way Forward, a campaign group.
