Richard Sherman Reflects on DeVonta Smith’s Route That Ultimately Led Him to Retire

Richard Sherman, the former Seattle Seahawks cornerback and member of the iconic “Legion of Boom,” reached the pinnacle of his career in the NFL. However, Sherman’s time in the league came to a close after the 2021 season, and he can vividly recall the play that signaled it was time to retire.

Sherman, a five-time Pro Bowler, three-time All-Pro, and Super Bowl champion, joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on a one-year deal for the 2021 season after spending two years with the San Francisco 49ers and seven successful seasons with the Seahawks.

It was during a game against the Philadelphia Eagles that Sherman had a revelation about his NFL career. The specific moment came when rookie DeVonta Smith ran a route against him at Lincoln Financial Field. Despite initially feeling in control of the situation, Sherman strained his groin while trying to keep up with Smith. This injury made him realize that he couldn’t compete with the younger players in the league, and he understood that it was probably his last year.

Although Smith had been performing exceptionally well in the previous games, totaling 199 yards, he only managed to catch two passes for 31 yards on four targets against Sherman. The Buccaneers ultimately won the game with a score of 28-22.

Injuries plagued Sherman throughout his final season, as he dealt with a calf injury before an Achilles injury ended his campaign prematurely. Despite his limited playing time, Sherman made an interception and a fumble recovery in the five games he played with the Bucs.

Sherman acknowledged Smith’s talent and potential in the NFL, as the former Alabama standout had an outstanding sophomore season, recording 1,196 yards and seven touchdowns on 95 receptions from quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Following his retirement from professional football, Sherman transitioned into a career in sports media.
