Richard Osman Reveals Rejection by MI6 After “Fun” Spy Tests

The bestselling author and quiz show host, Richard Osman, disclosed that he was denied a role in MI6 after participating in a series of enjoyable tests during his time at Cambridge University. Osman, 52, attended Trinity College, Cambridge, approximately three decades ago and has since become well-known for his involvement in BBC shows, including “Pointless” and “Richard Osman’s House Of Games.” Apart from his television career, Osman has made a name for himself in the literary world with his crime novels.

His debut crime novel, “The Thursday Murder Club,” was a finalist for the British Book Awards’ Crime and Thriller Book of the Year in 2020. The story revolves around Elizabeth Best, a retired spy residing in a retirement village who takes on the task of investigating murders. Osman’s success as a crime author has been remarkable.

In an interview with The Guardian, Osman revealed that while discussing his latest novel, “The Last Devil To Die,” he shared his experience of being considered for a potential role in MI6. He stated, “They (MI6) simply said: ‘No, it’s fine’… I would have been terrible. I’m too tall, not intelligent enough, and I can’t keep a secret. I would be the worst spy imaginable. I’m always telling the truth.”

Tongue-in-cheek, Osman jokingly added, “By the way, I’m still available if MI6 happens to read this. I could be useful now since no one would suspect me.”

Last year, Osman announced his departure from BBC One’s game show “Pointless,” which he co-hosted with Alexander Armstrong for nearly 13 years, in order to dedicate more time to writing his novels.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office declined to comment on the matter, maintaining the government’s traditional position of non-disclosure on intelligence agency matters.
