Richard Hanania, Right-Wing Writer, Faces Revelations of Racist History

A recent investigation by HuffPost has revealed that Richard Hanania, a prominent conservative writer and visiting scholar at the University of Texas, has been using a pen name, “Richard Hoste,” to write for white supremacist publications and contribute to the rise of the racist “alt-right.” In the early 2010s, Hanania expressed support for eugenics, advocated for forced sterilization of “low IQ” individuals, and promoted racist ideologies such as opposition to “miscegenation” and “race-mixing.” He even referenced a neo-Nazi author in one of his articles.

Despite his past affiliation with white supremacist writings, Hanania has managed to establish himself in mainstream media, writing op-eds for major newspapers, influencing influential individuals in Silicon Valley and the political sphere, and giving lectures at prestigious universities. He has also concealed his white supremacist writings while using his real name.

HuffPost connected Hanania to his pen name persona by analyzing leaked data from an online comment-hosting service, which revealed his use of three email addresses to create usernames on white supremacist sites. A blog maintained by Hoste was also registered to an address in Hanania’s hometown, and biographical information shared by Hoste aligned with Hanania’s personal life. Despite multiple requests, Hanania did not respond to HuffPost’s attempts to reach out to him for comments.

Hanania, who is 37 years old, has been published in major newspapers such as The New York Times and The Washington Post. He has delivered lectures at esteemed institutions like Yale and has appeared on popular shows like “Tucker Carlson Tonight” on Fox News. He has a podcast where he interviews notable figures in various fields. Additionally, he has gained the attention and support of billionaires such as Elon Musk and Peter Thiel, with Thiel providing a blurb for Hanania’s upcoming book. He has also attracted funding from undisclosed sources for a think tank he runs, which supports conservative academics and produces studies cited in right-wing media.

Hanania’s rise to success in mainstream conservative circles does not mean he has abandoned his racist views. He continues to make explicitly racist statements under his real name, showcasing a disturbing persistence in his obsession with race science and supporting a known racist and Holocaust denier. He has also expressed exclusionary views on social media, suggesting that he would not allow feminists, trans activists, or socialists on a platform like Twitter.

Richard Hanania’s story raises concerns about the direction of mainstream American conservatism. Over a decade ago, he felt the need to hide his racist views behind a pseudonym. Today, he is celebrated by right-wing circles and supported by wealthy individuals, all while echoing the rhetoric of his former white supremacist persona, Richard Hoste.

Unmasking Richard Hoste

Richard Hoste began writing for reprehensible publications in 2008, including antisemitic outlets and platforms that advocate for white supremacy. He was part of the early wave of writers recruited by Richard Spencer for AlternativeRight.com, a webzine that would become a propaganda platform for the emerging alt-right movement. Hoste wrote racially divisive articles, asserting that certain races were inherently superior to others based on dubious claims of neuroscience and cross-adoption studies.

Evidence linking Hoste to Hanania emerged through leaked data from Disqus, a comment-hosting service used by AlternativeRight.com. Hoste’s Disqus account was connected to other accounts that commented on the site, using email addresses associated with Richard Hanania. The writing style of these comments matched Hoste’s, further solidifying the connection. Hoste’s author biography also mentioned his role as the founder and editor of HBD Books, a blog associated with the white supremacist euphemism “human biodiversity” or race science. Hanania’s personal life aligned with the biographical details shared by Hoste, indicating that they are the same person.

The revelation of Hanania’s past and his use of a pen name suggests a troubling trend within mainstream American conservatism. Although Hanania has gained prominence and support from influential individuals, his racist views seemingly persist, and he continues to attract attention and followers who share those views.
