Rewriting the Bible: The Chinese Communist Party’s Controversial Move

Introducing a Revolutionary Way to Listen to Fox News Articles

In a groundbreaking effort to “sinicize” religious texts, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has undertaken a bold 10-year project to rewrite the Bible and other sacred texts. This initiative aims to reshape religion in line with the ideals of the state. The story of Jesus and the adulterous woman from the Gospel of John serves as a poignant example of forgiveness and mercy. However, in a recently discovered excerpt from a Chinese university textbook, this story takes a shocking turn. Instead of ending with mercy, the rewritten version portrays Jesus himself stoning the woman to death.

This alarming trend extends beyond the realm of Christianity. In Henan province, local officials from the CCP have coerced Protestant churches into replacing the Ten Commandments with quotes by Xi Jinping, the President of China. “Thou shalt have no other gods before Me” has been substituted with commands like “Resolutely guard against the infiltration of Western ideology.” This manipulation of religious texts is a part of Xi Jinping’s larger agenda to ensure that the faithful prioritize allegiance to the CCP over their devotion to God.

Xi Jinping’s desire to control religion is evident in his declaration at the 19th Party Congress, where he emphasized the need to “sinicize” Chinese religions and guide the coexistence of religion and socialism. In other words, Xi has no qualms about assuming the role of God, as long as it serves the interests of the CCP. Astonishingly, even the Vatican, which represents the largest Christian congregation in the world, has made a dubious pact with the CCP. In a secret negotiation in 2018, the Vatican agreed to let the CCP select Catholic bishops in China, under the guise of ensuring the safety of certain Catholic congregations. However, these assurances were promptly revoked.

The CCP’s reach extends far beyond Christianity. They also seek to control the selection process for the next Dalai Lama, a sacred tradition in Tibetan Buddhism. Despite resistance from Tibetan Buddhists, the CCP claims that even Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church, acknowledges their authority over Church leadership. The control that the CCP exerts over religion is suffocating, leaving no holy book untouched by their influence.

Religion represents a tantalizing source of power for the CCP – a means to demonstrate their supremacy on a global scale. The Chinese constitution states that citizens have the right to religious belief, but the CCP’s interpretation of “freedom” is synonymous with oppression. The United Front Work Department oversees religious affairs in China, viewing religion as a tool to be manipulated, co-opted, and corrupted to promote party objectives and, ultimately, control people’s thoughts.

Amidst this manipulation, only five faiths are officially recognized, leaving lesser-known faiths to face even more severe persecution. The Falun Gong spiritual practice, largely unfamiliar to those outside of China, has suffered greatly at the hands of the CCP. The State Department estimates that at certain times, up to half the population of China’s “Reeducation through Labor” camps were Falun Gong adherents. Many were subjected to torture, and reports of organ harvesting from Falun Gong prisoners have surfaced.

The CCP’s ruthless attitude toward religion is most apparent in Tibet and Xinjiang. While religious persecution is present throughout China, Buddhists and Muslims in these regions face the attempted eradication of their faith and, in some cases, their population. The CCP’s actions in Xinjiang can only be described as genocide, a crime of unimaginable magnitude. Shockingly, some of the world’s religious leaders, including Pope Francis, have remained largely silent in the face of these atrocities.

Uyghur poet Tahir Hamut Izgil captured the level of control enforced by the CCP, describing how Uyghurs were forced to surrender their religious items and betrayals among neighbors and even family members were rampant. Those who held onto their Qurans quickly faced detainment and harsh punishment. The repression has reached such an extreme that the Chinese government has essentially outlawed the practice of Islam.

The CCP’s aggression extends to cultural genocide as well. In China’s western and northern regions, they are systematically eradicating the Muslim and Buddhist faiths, while also attacking the unique identities of Tibetans, Uyghurs, Kyrgiz, southern Mongolians, and other minority groups. Buddhist statues are destroyed, monasteries are desecrated, and mosques are obliterated. Children are ripped away from their families and sent to schools where religion and native languages are forbidden.

Despite the intense persecution, faith perseveres in China, and the number of believers continues to grow. As a member of Congress, I have heard countless stories of religious oppression, but I have also been inspired by accounts of underground churches, courageous clergy members, and unwavering believers who possess the same resilience as the early saints of the Church.

The CCP’s relentless persecution of religion is not simply a battle against specific faiths; it is a war against the human spirit and our innate desire to seek something higher. While Chairman Mao may have labeled religion as “poison,” it is increasingly clear that the CCP’s persecution is rooted in their fear of anything surpassing their own authority. As a pastor from China aptly stated, “In this war, the rulers have chosen an enemy that can never be imprisoned – the soul of man.” It is our duty to ensure that his prediction comes true. Together, we must stand against the CCP’s tyranny and protect the freedom of religion for all.
