Revolutionary Development: Flying Taxis Set to Be Constructed in the Birthplace of Wright Brothers

The same Ohio river valley where the Wright brothers pioneered human flight will soon be home to a manufacturing facility for electric planes that take off and land vertically. This exciting development was announced on Monday, following an agreement between the state and Joby Aviation Inc. Electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft are gaining popularity worldwide, with the potential to revolutionize transportation. However, concerns about noise levels and charging infrastructure remain. Developers anticipate that eVTOL planes will soon offer a wide-scale alternative for transporting individuals and small groups from rooftops and parking garages, bypassing congested roads below.

Joby Aviation has chosen a 140-acre site at Dayton International Airport as the location for its first scaled manufacturing facility. This site is strategically located near Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the headquarters of the US Air Force Research Laboratories, connecting it to the rich aviation history of the area. Dayton was home to the Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, who established the first US airplane factory in the city in 1910. To honor this legacy, Joby’s announcement took place at Orville Wright’s home, Hawthorn Hill, and concluded with a ceremonial fly-past of a replica of the Wright Model B Flyer.

Joby’s eVTOL aircraft is designed to carry a pilot and four passengers at speeds of up to 200 miles per hour, with a maximum range of 100 miles. The company plans to integrate these aircraft into aerial ridesharing networks by 2025. Joby’s efforts are supported by key partnerships with Toyota, Delta Air Lines, Intel, and Uber. With up to $325 million in incentives from the state of Ohio and local government, the $500 million project is set to create 2,000 jobs and produce 500 aircraft per year. Joby recently became the first eVTOL company to receive US Air Force airworthiness certification. Additionally, the Department of Energy has invited Joby to apply for a loan to support the development of the facility as a clean energy project.
