Revival of ‘Cabaret’, an Award-Winning Show, to Debut on Broadway in Spring

Welcome to Broadway! Prepare yourself for an extraordinary experience as the ever-popular musical “Cabaret” returns to the stage in a thrilling new production that has garnered high praise in London. The producing team has announced their plan to transfer the show to Broadway, with the August Wilson Theater set to host its grand opening after the conclusion of the “Funny Girl” revival on September 3rd.

While no specific details have been disclosed by the “Cabaret” producers, it is widely anticipated that the talented Eddie Redmayne, known for his film roles, will reprise his mesmerizing portrayal of the Master of Ceremonies from the London revival. As for the iconic role of Sally Bowles, originally played by Jessie Buckley, the search for the perfect actress to bring her to life in New York is still underway.

“Cabaret,” featuring captivating music by John Kander, insightful lyrics by Fred Ebb, and a compelling book by Joe Masteroff, originally dazzled Broadway audiences in 1966. Directed by the legendary Hal Prince and starring Joel Grey, this production claimed eight Tony Awards, including the coveted title of Best Musical, and enjoyed a three-year run. Joel Grey, along with the incomparable Liza Minnelli, later captivated audiences in the 1972 Academy Award-winning film adaptation.

This timeless musical experienced a revival in 1987, once again under Hal Prince’s direction and with Joel Grey reprising his iconic role as the Emcee. In 1998, a new production helmed by Sam Mendes, featuring Alan Cumming and Natasha Richardson, graced the Broadway stage; it ran until 2004 and then made a triumphant return in 2014 for another memorable year, starring Michelle Williams opposite Cumming.

The latest revival, skillfully directed by Rebecca Frecknall, made its mark in London in 2021, capturing seven Olivier Awards, including Best Musical Revival. The esteemed theater critic Matt Wolf described the production as “nerve-shredding,” praising Frecknall’s ability to immerse the audience in a hedonistic world while leaving them haunted by life’s harsh realities by the end of the three-hour performance.

The lead producers of this remarkable production are Ambassador Theater Group, a respected British company with theaters across Europe and the United States, and Underbelly, a prominent British entity closely associated with the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

“Cabaret” will join a collection of shows on Broadway this season that bravely tackle the theme of antisemitism, including “Just for Us,” a one-man show by comedian Alex Edelman, currently running, as well as “Harmony,” a forthcoming musical by Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman, and “Prayer for the French Republic,” a play by Joshua Harmon set to open in the winter. The previous Tony-winning best play, “Leopoldstadt,” which recently concluded its run, and the Tony-winning best musical revival, “Parade,” which continues until August 6th, also explore the topic of antisemitism.

Prepare yourself to be transported to the spellbinding world of “Cabaret” as it makes its triumphant return to Broadway. Isolated moments of joy, profound emotions, and haunting revelations await you in this unforgettable musical experience.
