Review of ‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’: Unleashing the Horror at Sea

Horror enthusiasts often find themselves yelling at the characters on the screen, “Don’t go in the basement!” But in “The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” I couldn’t help but think, “Just go below deck and kill him already!”

Based on a chapter from Bram Stoker’s famous novel “Dracula,” this intense and terrifying film takes place on a London-bound merchant ship that is plagued by a bloodthirsty vampire. During the day, everything seems normal, but as soon as night falls, the stowaway vampire awakens to satisfy his horrifying hunger, attacking unsuspecting victims before retreating to his makeshift coffin.

The predictable routine of Dracula’s nocturnal activities begs the question: why doesn’t the crew strike during the day? It would have saved the film’s protagonist, Clemens (Corey Hawkins), a lot of trouble.

The movie begins with Clemens, a knowledgeable British doctor, seeking to join the crew of the Demeter. Despite being the only educated person on board, Clemens proves himself as a competent deckhand and earns the respect of both the experienced first mate, Wojchek (David Dastmalchian), and the captain’s young grandson, Toby (Woody Norman).

However, “The Last Voyage,” directed by André Ovredal, doesn’t spend much time on character development. Instead, it quickly delves into a series of ominous events and terrifying encounters as Dracula systematically eliminates the ship’s crew members. The film makes feeble attempts to incorporate modern updates, such as a female character who can handle a rifle and a monologue about racism, but these efforts are as unsuccessful as the crew’s desperate struggle against their predetermined fate.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter
Rated R for intense action and horror. Running time: 1 hour 58 minutes. Now playing in theaters.
