Review of Final Fantasy XVI: The Sword Shines with Dialogue Triumphance

Final Fantasy, a renowned and story-driven RPG series, embraces its plot exposition in the latest installment, XVI. While the game offers extensive cut-scenes, it also introduces a dynamic combat system that breaks away from the traditional turn-based battles of previous titles, taking inspiration from Devil May Cry’s spectacular combos of melee and magic.

However, before engaging in combat, players must witness the unfolding of a grandiose plot, where a kingdom faces apocalyptic threats and a hero named Clive emerges as their potential savior. The storyline, resembling a rejected Game of Thrones spin-off, features double-crossing, fantastical creatures, and communities battling evil forces and each other in a medieval world. Nonetheless, the game’s stunning visuals and majestic landscapes offer a captivating experience. Notably, the voice cast includes Ralph Ineson, known for his role as Dagmer Cleftjaw in Game of Thrones, who delivers an impressive performance as renegade leader Cid.

The remaining cast features a diverse group of actors, portraying characters with various British regional dialects. However, these accents cannot save the melodramatic and convoluted plot that XVI occasionally succumbs to. Additionally, the side-quests lack creativity and fail to leave a lasting impression.

Whether players choose to immerse themselves in the intricate plot or not, there is a sense of relief when control is handed back to the player, allowing Clive to resume his action-packed combat.

Clive, accompanied by a party of two or three allies, relies on his skills to deal most of the damage using a combination of blade strikes and magical attacks. As players progress through the game, they gain access to a wide range of spells, from fire to lightning, as well as the ability to summon giant creatures for devastating assaults on enemies, reminiscent of the classic Final Fantasy summons.

While the free-roaming combat may not match the slickness of Devil May Cry, even button-mashing produces entertaining results as players zip around the battlefield, dismantling foes and evading attacks.

Despite its indulgent storytelling and energetic battles, XVI manages to strike a balance between the two elements, making it an enjoyable addition to the beloved Final Fantasy series. While it may not reach the same level of cohesion and novelty as XV, it offers enough satisfying content to please most fans.
