Review: Julia Masli’s “Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha” Delivers Healing Hilarity at Edinburgh Festival 2023

At every fringe festival, there is always one show that captures the essence of the event; a show that feels unique to its surroundings. It becomes the hottest ticket in town, attracting famous faces and fellow comedians. This year, that show is “ha ha ha ha ha ha ha” by Julia Masli. Set in an underground room, the audience is in awe of what they witness. Audience participation is a crucial part of the show, and each night brings something new and unexpected.

Julia Masli takes on the role of an enigmatic agony aunt, providing healing to the crowd. As a clown, her previous show “Choosh!” explored the journey of a migrant from Eastern Europe to the US. However, in this show, the stories come directly from the audience. Julia, dressed in Victorian bridalwear with a mannequin’s leg for an arm, approaches them and simply asks: “Problem?”. The problems shared by the audience, such as heartbreak, longing for a loved one, or being perpetually single, become the heart of the show as Julia creatively attempts to solve them.

One could view the show as mere comedic stunts, with Julia engaging in vodka toasts with a hairy Finn, organizing a dating game, and even having a gentleman repair a broken chair. However, Julia’s brilliance lies in her innocent and earnest approach, which transforms the show into something more than a joke. Perhaps sharing a problem, even with an eccentric Estonian clown or a room full of strangers, truly lightens the burden?

Tonight’s main volunteer, Alayna, has a transformative experience during the show, willingly shedding her clothes as part of the finale. Julia handles this moment with both delight and sensitivity, ensuring everyone’s comfort. What emerges is a collective sense of joy and excitement for what Julia has created—a unexpected celebration of mutual care led by a mischievous yet compassionate clown.
