Review: Gal Gadot’s Suiting Up for a Less Than Marvelous Spy Thriller – Heart of Stone

CNN

“Heart of Stone” is a clever attempt to create a spy franchise centered around the talented Gal Gadot. However, this Netflix film falls short of capturing Gadot’s captivating charm. Despite some impressive action scenes, the movie feels lifeless and fails to leave a lasting impression.

Reminiscent of the “Spy v. Spy” comic strip, the film introduces Gadot as Rachel Stone, an MI6 agent assigned to provide intelligence to field operatives. However, Stone is secretly a member of the Charter, a legendary spy network using advanced AI technology called the Heart to combat threats.

Stone’s Charter contacts, known only by playing-card names, include her boss and a skilled tech expert. Together, they form a formidable team, utilizing cutting-edge technology reminiscent of “Minority Report” and “Person of Interest.”

All the covert operations take place without the knowledge of Stone’s MI6 team, led by Parker, who find themselves chasing a skilled hacker in the Italian Alps.

The plot of “Heart of Stone” takes an unexpected twist, adding some promise to the film. However, it ultimately descends into a convoluted game of spy versus spy versus spy, with Stone engaging in thrilling action sequences across different international locations.

Directed by Tom Harper, “Heart of Stone” capitalizes on Gadot’s likability but fails to add enough unique elements to differentiate itself from the “Mission: Impossible” franchise.

Unlike Gadot’s previous Netflix film, “Red Notice,” which injected humor into the genre, “Heart of Stone” lacks playfulness. Even the standout action sequences fail to justify the overall viewing experience.

While Gadot shines as a protagonist, the structure of “Heart of Stone” lacks depth, leaving Stone feeling like just another cinematic spy without a clear backstory to set her apart.

Ultimately, “Heart of Stone” feels like a patchwork of other spy films, lacking a cohesive and distinctive identity. While its intentions are good, the execution feels disjointed.

“Heart of Stone” premieres August 11 on Netflix. It is rated PG-13.
