Review: Conner O’Malley’s Silicon Valley Parody Presents Hilarious Standup Solutions

Streaming platforms are becoming more personalized, offering content that suits our individual preferences. But what if standup comedy could do the same? Richard Eagleton, the founder and CEO of Standup Solutions and creator of KENN, the world’s first AI comedian, explores this idea in a hilarious corporate presentation spoof performed by Conner O’Malley. Known for his popular online work, O’Malley’s parody of Silicon Valley values and tech utopianism is both entertaining and thought-provoking. However, the humor is not subtle, and the portrayal of O’Malley’s digital guru alter ego is predictable.

The joke begins with Eagleton’s continuously delayed introduction of the revolutionary AI development. Instead, we first learn about Eagleton’s childhood in Des Plaines, Illinois. Then we hear about his cherished car, complete with extensive technical specifications. Next, he discusses his workout routine and diet, satirizing the absurd and macho behavior associated with performative, competitive well-being.

The problem lies in O’Malley’s obnoxious and exaggerated persona, which can sometimes become grating. The joke about his dullness doesn’t always rescue the audience from actual boredom. Similarly, the comedy of KENN (only seen on-screen) being a terrible standup doesn’t salvage the quality of his jokes. However, we cannot blame KENN entirely. His creator claims that he mines data from the audience to deliver the jokes they are likely to find funny. While these ideas are intriguing, they often devolve into jokes about explicit content and toilet humor. Eagleton’s backstory, which involves cuckoldry and business failure, is unsurprising when revealed.

To its credit, the show allows O’Malley to demonstrate his artistic character work and even incorporates clever faux home videos. O’Malley goes beyond being just an online comic, showcasing his ability to connect with the audience through sensitive and less forceful improvised material. A show tailored to my preferences, whether AI-generated or not, would benefit from this lighter touch being more widespread.
