Revealed: Cori Bush Received Thousands for Teaching a Graduate-Level Reparations Course at George Mason

Democratic Representative Cori Bush received a salary of $15,000 for teaching a graduate-level reparations course at George Mason University in Washington, D.C. last year. This course, titled “The Public Pedagogy of Truth and Reparations,” focused on exploring mechanisms such as truth-telling processes, participatory critical pedagogy, and reparations as political and moral practices to address state-sponsored violence against African Americans and other targeted groups. The course aimed to foster greater racial justice in the United States and beyond.

Cori Bush has been a prominent advocate for reparations in the United States Congress. In May, she introduced a $14 trillion reparations proposal to address the wealth gap between White and Black people that she believes was caused by racist government policies. Bush emphasized the urgency of addressing the historical and ongoing harm inflicted on Black people in the country, stating that the United States was founded at the expense of their lives, freedom, and well-being.

When questioned about the funding for her reparations proposal, Bush acknowledged ongoing discussions and collaborations with the administration and fellow members of Congress. She drew attention to the financial resources allocated to endless wars and stressed that funding reparations should also be considered a priority.

It is worth noting that Bush’s proposed reparations amount is significantly higher than the cost of the Afghanistan war, estimated at $2.3 trillion over 20 years.

The push for reparations has gained momentum across the country, with cities like San Francisco forming the Mayors Organized for Reparations and Equity (MORE) group. MORE aims to develop a blueprint for implementing a national reparations program, bringing together progressive city leaders who have initiated or implemented reparations pilot programs in their respective cities.

George Mason University and Cori Bush’s congressional office did not provide a response when contacted for further information on her reparations course.
