In addition, she was named the Best FIFA Women’s Player in 2019 and received the 2019 Ballon d’Or Féminin for her outstanding performance at the World Cup.

Beyond her success on the field, Rapinoe also stands as an advocate for the LGBTQ community, gender equality, and voting rights. In 2022, she became the first soccer player to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Her impactful work led to her inclusion in the 2023 TIME Women of the Year list.

Speaking to U.S. Soccer, Rapinoe expressed her gratitude for the incredible career she has had and the opportunities it has brought her. She said, “I’ve been able to have such an incredible career, and this game has brought me all over the world and allowed me to meet so many amazing people. I feel incredibly grateful to have played as long as I have, to be as successful as we’ve been, and to have been a part of a generation of players who undoubtedly left the game better than they found it.”

Rapinoe will participate in her final World Cup this summer and conclude her career with OL Reign, her long-time club. The club has announced plans to honor Rapinoe and her remarkable journey during their final match of the regular season on October 6.
