Restoring Broken-Windows Policing and Enhancing Quality of Life: The NYPD’s New Boss Aims for Change

Congratulations to Edward Caban for his appointment as the next commissioner of the NYPD by Mayor Eric Adams.

Here is his first priority: Restoring broken-windows policing and placing a laser-like focus on quality-of-life offenses.

Gotham has witnessed a decrease in murders, although they still exceed pre-pandemic levels.

However, New Yorkers are still dealing with smaller but serious crimes that are spiraling out of control, such as car thefts, shoplifting, and drug dealing.

As recently reported by The Post, drug dealers are openly selling psilocybin mushrooms in Washington Square Park, even in front of the police. One of them even threatened a photographer who attempted to take a picture.

Counterfeiters are also back on Canal Street and other parts of lower Manhattan, selling fake luxury goods, harming customers, obstructing sidewalks, and stealing business from legitimate sellers.

Moreover, the streets and subways are plagued by individuals struggling with mental illness, drug addiction, and homelessness, posing a threat to public safety.
