Restaurant Review: Lark in Bury St Edmunds – Exceptionally Pleasant with a Clever and Relaxed Atmosphere

Located at 6A Angel Hill in Bury St Edmunds, Lark is a charming restaurant that offers a unique and special dining experience. We pride ourselves on offering dishes that are truly exceptional, unlike the overused term “special” in other contexts. Our menu features a range of snacks priced at £2.50 to £7, plates ranging from £11 to £28, delightful desserts priced between £10 and £12, and a selection of wines starting from £25 a bottle.

At Lark, our special truly lives up to its name. The description alone will make your mouth water: “rabbit shank and black pudding pie, girolles, cream madeira sauce.” Ignore any doubts about the anatomy of rabbits or the abundance of meat in their shanks, because this pie is a culinary masterpiece. Served on a bed of pea purée, surrounded by a rich and flavorful sauce filled with girolles and herbs, this golden pastry-encased pie resembles a thigh. A bone may even make an appearance, though it’s purely for visual effect. Inside the crisp pastry, you’ll find layers of blanched cabbage leaf, crumbly black pudding, and perfectly seasoned shredded rabbit. It’s a combination that will leave you swooning and craving for more.

Created by the talented Freddie Footer and head chef James Carn, both with impressive backgrounds including the renowned Michelin-starred restaurant Pea Porridge, Lark’s dishes are a testament to their culinary expertise. The team, which also includes up-and-coming talent Ewan, prides itself on delivering exceptional quality. Their dedication is evident in every bite.

Housed in a building with a rich history, formerly a bus shelter, police station, and florist’s, Lark offers an intimate dining space that seats just 20 guests. The polished concrete floors and white walls adorned with abstract art create a comfortable atmosphere for a memorable dining experience. Our menu consists of small plates, each increasing in size and price. From classic delights like sautéed sweetbreads in café de Paris butter to more modern creations such as sherry-cured trout with kohlrabi and ajo blanco, our dishes showcase a fusion of traditional and contemporary flavors. We also offer tempting sides like golden hash browns and refreshing radishes with whipped lardo.

To round out your meal, we offer a selection of delectable desserts, including an indulgent apple tarte tatin and a tangy mango and passion fruit trifle adorned with caramelized white chocolate. Our compact wine list complements our dishes perfectly, and our attentive service ensures a seamless dining experience.

Lark is truly a unique and special restaurant in Bury St Edmunds. Our ambition, creativity, and relaxed atmosphere combine to provide a highly enjoyable dining experience. Don’t just take our word for it – come and experience our exceptional dishes for yourself.
