Resilient Athlete Saves Official’s Life by Using Hands as Impromptu Tourniquet

Held every four years, the Asian Games is a multisport event that will conclude this Sunday. However, this year’s competition in the Chinese city of Hangzhou took a terrifying turn during one match. Huang Qinhua, a 62-year-old official, was sitting outside the netting of the hammer throw event. Kuwait’s Ali Zankawi threw the hammer, a 16-pound metal ball attached to a grip with a wire, which unexpectedly flew sideways and struck Huang’s leg, causing chaos. This incident was reported by Reuters.

Huang’s leg was badly injured, causing visible pain and bleeding. Zankawi acted swiftly and tried to minimize the bleeding by creating a tourniquet with his hands until medical staff arrived. Huang was then rushed to the hospital, where it was determined that he had a broken leg. “Currently his vital signs are stable,” stated an Asian Games spokesperson during a press conference on Sunday. France 24 reported that Zankawi visited Huang in the hospital to apologize, and the two men even took a photo together.

France 24 also interviewed Zankawi, who expressed relief that the incident wasn’t more severe. Zankawi came in eighth in the hammer throw event and shared his gratitude that the hammer first hit the ground before striking Huang’s leg. Reuters highlighted the response on the Chinese social media site Weibo, where users criticized the safety protocols for the hammer throw. The netting, although designed to prevent the hammer from bouncing back, is unable to completely stop the impact of the flying metal ball.
