July 3 (UPI) — The 2023 MLB All-Star Game reserve selections have been announced, featuring players such as Adley Rutschman, Clayton Kershaw, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr., among others.
MLB revealed the 46 pitchers and bench players who were chosen through a combination of fan votes and selections made by the commissioner’s office.
The Atlanta Braves lead with eight selections, the highest number for a single team since 2012.
The All-Star Game will take place on July 11 at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. A total of 26 players from both the American League and National League rosters will be making their first appearance in the All-Star Game.
The All-Star starters were announced earlier, with Los Angeles Angels’ Shohei Ohtani receiving votes as the starting designated hitter and also earning a spot on the American League roster as a pitcher.
Other starting pitchers on the American League roster include Gerrit Cole of the New York Yankees, Luis Castillo of the Seattle Mariners, Nathan Eovaldi of the Texas Rangers, Kevin Gausman of the Toronto Blue Jays, Sonny Gray of the Minnesota Twins, Michael Lorenzen of the Detroit Tigers, Shane McClanahan of the Tampa Bay Rays, and Framber Valdez of the Houston Astros.
The relief pitchers for the American League include Felix Bautista and Yennier Cano of the Baltimore Orioles, Emmanuel Clase of the Cleveland Guardians, and Kenley Jansen of the Boston Red Sox.
Adley Rutschman, along with Salvador Perez of the Kansas City Royals, has been chosen as bench players for the American League as catchers.
Reserve infielders for the American League consist of Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, and Whit Merrifield of the Toronto Blue Jays, and Jose Ramirez of the Cleveland Guardians. Yordan Alvarez of the Astros, Adolis Garcia of the Rangers, Austin Hays of the Orioles, and Luis Robert Jr. of the White Sox have been selected as reserve outfielders.
Brent Rooker of the Oakland Athletics has been chosen as a reserve designated hitter.
Jorge Soler of the Miami Marlins has been selected as a reserve designated hitter for the National League. Nick Castellanos of the Philadelphia Phillies, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. of the Arizona Diamondbacks, and Juan Soto of the San Diego Padres have been chosen as backup outfielders.
Infielders Pete Alonso of the New York Mets, Dansby Swanson of the Chicago Cubs, and Ozzie Albies, Matt Olson, and Austin Riley of the Atlanta Braves have also been selected for the National League bench.
Elias Diaz of the Colorado Rockies and Will Smith of the Los Angeles Dodgers will serve as the National League’s backup catchers.
The National League bullpen will be filled by Alexis Díaz of the Cincinnati Reds, Camilo Doval of the San Francisco Giants, Josh Hader of the San Diego Padres, and Devin Williams of the San Diego Padres.
Kershaw, along with Zac Gallen of the Diamondbacks, Josiah Gray of the Washington Nationals, Mitch Keller of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Justin Steele and Marcus Stroman of the Chicago Cubs, and Bryce Elder and Spencer Strider of the Braves, has been selected as National League starting pitchers.
The All-Star Game will be broadcasted at 8 p.m. EDT on July 11 on Fox. The 2023 Home Run Derby is scheduled to air at 8 p.m. on July 10 on ESPN.
