Scientists at the Oma Clinic in California have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm that can scan sperm to determine which ones are the healthiest. Even in men with healthy lifestyles, only about 10% of sperm are considered healthy, and in some men, the ratio falls below 4%. The algorithm analyzes the shape and movement of the sperm to identify the best candidates for fertilization. The goal is to improve success rates with in vitro fertilization (IVF) and reduce costs, allowing couples to undergo fewer rounds of treatment.
To develop the algorithm, the scientists extracted a subset of sperm from each sample and analyzed their health under a microscope. A healthy sperm is characterized by a smooth and oval-shaped head, as well as rapid and straight-line swimming. However, finding these healthy swimmers is often compared to searching for a “needle in a haystack.” The algorithm was trained using samples from over 1,000 men, ranging from their 30s to 75 years old.
Results from the AI algorithm are delivered within seconds, with red boxes indicating unhealthy sperm and green boxes indicating healthy sperm. The researchers have conducted tests comparing IVF rounds that used the technology to those that did not. While the results cannot be disclosed yet, there is reportedly a significant difference in success rates between the two groups.
The AI technology has the potential to revolutionize the IVF industry by improving fertilization rates, reducing costs, and shortening the time needed for couples to conceive. It can also provide a second opinion for scientists, as identifying healthy sperm can be challenging. With the rising trend of couples delaying starting a family, the number of children born via IVF in the United States is expected to continue increasing, potentially reaching 50% of all births by 2050.
