Aug. 7 (UPI) — Marine rescuers in Alaska recently came across a unique situation when they discovered a young walrus calf wandering alone, far from the sea. Recognizing the dire situation and the calf’s need for immediate assistance, the Alaska SeaLife Center took the young walrus into its care. The organization provided round-the-clock cuddling to ensure the calf’s comfort and healthy development.

The rescue took place on August 1, when the calf was found on the North Slope, which is located inland from the Beaufort Sea. It was clear that the helpless walrus would not survive much longer without help. The calf was initially housed in a warehouse overnight and later transferred to the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward. Upon examination, experts determined that the walrus was dehydrated, malnourished, and had a cloudy eye, potentially indicating infection.

According to the Alaska SeaLife Center, walruses are highly social and rely heavily on maternal care during the first two years of life. To replicate the close bond with its mother, the center is providing constant cuddling to the calf. This ensures not only its physical well-being but also promotes healthy emotional development.

The walrus quickly adjusted to its new environment and is now being fed from a bottle. In a follow-up Facebook post, the Alaska SeaLife Center shared that the calf continues to eat and appears alert, showing signs of progress during the weekend.
