Rescheduling of Sporting Events to Avoid Overlapping with Prince Philip’s Funeral

The England women’s Six Nations match against Italy paid tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh with a two minutes’ silence and the flying of the English flag at half-mast. Players and officials wore black armbands to honor his memory.

In Scotland, all clubs in the four professional divisions observed a minute’s silence, while the Cymru Premier and Welsh Premier Women’s League matches also held a moment of silence. The Northern Ireland Football League allowed clubs to decide on tributes.

Tributes were also honored at rugby league’s Challenge Cup matches, and British Rowing athletes wore black ribbons at the European Championships to show their respect.

On Friday morning, Buckingham Palace announced the peaceful passing of the Duke of Edinburgh at Windsor Castle.

Various football fixtures, including Fulham’s Premier League match against Wolves, England women’s friendly in France, Wales women’s friendly against Canada, and county cricket fixtures, paid their respects to the Duke.

Both sporting stars and governing bodies expressed their condolences.

Concerning the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral, the Premier League match between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sheffield United, scheduled for next Saturday, will be rescheduled to prevent a clash.

The English Football League and Premiership Rugby have already confirmed the rescheduling of their fixtures for the same day. Additionally, the Scottish National and the Dubai Duty Free Classic Trials horse racing meetings have been moved to Sunday.

Meetings between Wolves, Sheffield United, the Premier League, Sky Sports, and the Government took place on Monday to discuss a change to the 3pm kick-off time, which coincides with a national minute’s silence at the start of the funeral. Both teams have a clear week before and after the match, but as it is set to be televised by Sky Sports, they are also looking for a suitable window within the busy televised sports schedule.

The British Horseracing Authority confirmed that there will be no racing between 2.45 and 4.15 on Saturday, resulting in the rescheduling of the two main meetings. ITV will cover both big racing events on Sunday.

Additionally, Bangor and Thirsk meetings are expected to start early to conclude before 2.45, while the evening meetings at Brighton and Nottingham will proceed mainly as planned with minor time adjustments. The first day of Newbury and Ayr will take place as scheduled on Friday.

In Scotland, the Rangers vs. Celtic match is scheduled for 4pm on Saturday as part of the Scottish Cup’s fourth round. The Scottish Football Association is in discussions with relevant stakeholders regarding these fixtures in light of Prince Philip’s funeral.

According to the government’s advice, decisions regarding rescheduling sporting fixtures are at the organizers’ discretion. However, they are encouraged to consider black armbands and observe moments of silence before matches. Tributes have been paid throughout the sporting weekend to Prince Philip, who passed away at the age of 99 on Friday.

Before Saturday’s Grand National, a two-minute silence was held, jockeys wore black armbands, and flags were flown at half-mast. Similar moments of silence and black armbands were observed in all Premier League and EFL matches. Wembley and St George’s Park also flew their flags at half-mast to honor Prince Philip.
