Republicans refuse to pledge allegiance as Trump criticizes Biden

In a video shared on his Truth Social media platform, former President Donald Trump expressed his frustration towards his successor and the special prosecutor at the Department of Justice, Jack Smith. The video was accompanied by an image of Mr. Trump. This outburst comes as three senior members of his administration and other former allies have turned against him following his arraignment on 37 counts in a Florida court.

Accusing the Biden administration of pressuring Jack Smith to initiate the “fake indictment” against him, Mr. Trump claimed that the charges were being used as a distraction. This marks the latest in a series of strong statements from the former president who, during a recent speech, referred to the charges as yet another attempt to manipulate a presidential election.

Despite repeated denials from President Biden and his aides regarding their involvement in the prosecution, Mr. Trump remains the first former US president to face criminal charges. He pleaded not guilty to all 37 counts, which pertain to classified documents found at his Florida estate, Mar-a-Lago.

Apart from these charges, the former president is facing numerous other legal battles. He has also pleaded not guilty to 34 felony charges related to allegations of falsifying business records in connection with hush money paid to Stormy Daniels, a former adult film actress.

While Trump’s base of supporters remains loyal, several senior members of his administration have distanced themselves from him. Former Attorney General Bill Barr warned that Mr. Trump’s future prospects would be jeopardized if even half of the charges in the Mar-a-Lago indictment were true. Additionally, former White House Chief of Staff John Kelly suggested that the indictment had left Mr. Trump extremely anxious.

Notably, two of Mr. Trump’s rivals for the Republican nomination, Chris Christie and Asa Hutchinson, have refused to pledge their support to him if he secures the party’s nomination in the future. Moreover, when asked whether he would pardon Mr. Trump if he were convicted, South Carolina senator and presidential candidate Tim Scott chose not to address the hypothetical question, stating that he would not engage in such discussions.

It is evident that Mr. Trump’s legal troubles have created a divide among his former allies, with some distancing themselves from him and expressing skepticism about his defense against the charges he faces. As these legal battles continue, the political landscape remains uncertain for the former president.
