Republicans from both the House and Senate unite to hold the FTC accountable for disposing of documents linked to a congressional investigation

Top Republicans in Congress are promising to take action against the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for allegedly destroying documents related to a congressional investigation. Senator Ted Cruz, the ranking member on the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, penned a letter to FTC Chair Lina Khan, expressing concerns over the potential violation of federal law and impeding of congressional oversight. The letter was co-signed by Representative Jim Jordan, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, and Representative James Comer, chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability. This move by Republican legislators comes after the FTC’s internal watchdog found flaws in the agency’s record-keeping process. The Republicans allege that the FTC improperly deleted documents requested by Jordan in relation to the agency’s proposed rule banning non-compete clauses. Jordan criticized the rule, arguing that it oversteps the agency’s authority and imposes burdensome restrictions. The Republicans are seeking answers from the FTC regarding the deletion of documents and have requested a comprehensive list of communications from the agency.
