Republican Senator Rand Paul sends a ‘formal criminal referral’ to the DOJ concerning Dr. Fauci, claiming a 2020 email exposes falsehood in the former White House physician’s COVID testimony.

Republican Senator Rand Paul from Kentucky has submitted an official criminal referral to the Department of Justice regarding Dr. Anthony Fauci. Paul alleges that Fauci, the nation’s former top doctor, committed perjury during his testimony about the origins of the coronavirus and its potential connection to a Chinese lab. Perjury is a federal offense carrying a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

In his letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, Paul calls for an investigation into whether Fauci lied under oath about his knowledge of dangerous virus research being conducted at the Wuhan lab in China. Paul claims that Fauci denied funding gain-of-function research in China during his testimony, but emails reveal that Fauci described the research being conducted in those labs. Paul accuses Fauci of consistently lying to Congress, which is a felony.

Gain-of-function research involves intentionally introducing genetic changes or mutations into viruses to study their behavior and characteristics. While it provides valuable insights, it also raises concerns about biosafety and biosecurity.

Dr. Fauci, who was the former Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, was responsible for approving research grants related to gain-of-function research. Emails released by the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic revealed that scientists had concerns about the possibility of the coronavirus being genetically engineered and were aware of gain-of-function research happening in Wuhan before the pandemic.

Despite Fauci’s knowledge of gain-of-function research at the Wuhan lab, he never admitted that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded it. However, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) determined that both the Wuhan Institute of Virology and Wuhan University did receive funding from the NIH.

Paul references a February 2020 email where Fauci mentions a call discussing the origins of Covid and the suspicions surrounding the Wuhan lab’s gain-of-function experiments. Paul claims that Fauci’s previous testimony contradicts this email, leading him to submit a criminal referral to the Department of Justice.

During a hearing in July 2021, Paul confronted Fauci about the U.S. funding gain-of-function research in Wuhan. Fauci denied ever lying before Congress and dismissed Paul’s claims. The disagreement escalated, with Fauci pointing his fingers at Paul and accusing him of being a liar.

Paul contends that the paper citing NIH funding shows evidence that the Wuhan lab conducted research to make a bat coronavirus transmittable to humans, resulting in a more infectious and deadly virus. Fauci argues that the paper was not deemed gain-of-function by qualified staff.

The question of the coronavirus’s origins has sparked intense debate, with theories ranging from a spillover from wildlife sold at the Huanan market to a potential lab leak from the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Dr. Shi Zhengli, a virologist at the Wuhan lab, has faced scrutiny but denies any possibility of a lab connection to the virus.
