Reports: Giants’ star Saquon Barkley faces lengthy absence due to ankle injury

The New York Giants pulled off an incredible comeback victory against the Arizona Cardinals, but it came at a cost.

During the team’s final drive that led to a game-winning field goal by Graham Gano, star running back Saquon Barkley suffered an ankle injury and had to limp off the field.

After an MRI, it was revealed that Barkley had a “ordinary” ankle sprain and will be out for three weeks, according to ESPN.

The Giants have some tough games ahead against the San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, and Miami Dolphins. All three teams are in the playoff hunt this year, so losing Barkley will be a big blow for the Giants.

There’s no denying Barkley’s impact on the team. He is one of the NFL’s top running backs and his versatility gives defenses nightmares every week. In the Giants’ comeback win, Barkley scored both a rushing and receiving touchdown.

New York has had a rough start to the season, despite being 1-1. The Cardinals, who were expected to be one of the weakest teams in the league, had a 20-0 lead at halftime. The Giants hadn’t scored a single point in six quarters since their 40-0 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1.

The upcoming games against tough opponents were already a challenge before Barkley got injured. The team will need effective play-calling and players stepping up to prevent their record from spiraling out of control.

Barkley made headlines during the offseason for not reaching a long-term contract extension with the Giants, citing concerns about the running back market. One of the reasons for his hesitation is the higher likelihood of injury for running backs compared to other positions in the NFL.
