Reports: Former NFL Wide Receiver and Cal Football Hall of Famer, Sean Dawkins, Passes Away at Age 52

Former Cal football Hall of Famer, Sean Dawkins, who had a successful career in the NFL primarily with the Indianapolis Colts, tragically passed away at the age of 52, as per reports. University officials confirmed the news to the San Francisco Chronicle, but the cause of death remains unknown.

Dawkins, a standout player for the Golden Bears during his senior year, was selected by the Colts in the first round of the 1993 NFL Draft. Owner Jim Irsay expressed his condolences, saying, “Rest in peace, Sean Dawkins. I am shocked and saddened. My prayers and condolences to Sean’s family.”

During his time with the Colts, which spanned five years, Dawkins accumulated impressive stats, including 251 receptions for 3,511 yards and 12 touchdowns. However, his best season came in 1999 when he played for the Seattle Seahawks. That year, he caught 58 passes for 992 yards and seven touchdowns.

Dawkins concluded his career after one season with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Over his nine-year NFL journey with four different teams, he amassed 445 receptions, 6,291 yards, and 25 touchdowns. The news of his passing deeply affected former NFL safety Dr. Derwin L. Gray, who wrote, “Another one of my teammates, Sean Dawkins, has passed away at age 52. Sean and I were in the Colts 1993 Draft Class. He was one of the first big WR in the NFL at 6’5, 220. He was elegant, such a marvelous football player. Tough day.”

In 2005, Dawkins was honored with induction into the Cal Athletics Hall of Fame. He holds several program records, including career and single-season touchdown receptions, as well as single-season receptions and yards, according to the school’s website. Dawkins’ legacy as a skilled athlete and exceptional football player will undoubtedly be remembered.
