Reports: Biden’s Iran envoy sidelined following investigation and suspension of security clearance

In an ongoing investigation into the mishandling of classified documents, Rob Malley, the U.S. special envoy for Iran, has been placed on leave due to a security clearance suspension earlier this year. The suspension resulted in his inability to access classified information while remaining in his position.

According to a U.S. official who spoke to CNN Thursday, the State Department conducted the investigation, leading to Malley’s suspension. Matt Miller, a State Department spokesperson, confirmed that Abram Paley will be serving as the acting special envoy to Iran in Malley’s absence.

Malley, who has been in his position for two years, acknowledged that his security clearance is under review but expressed confidence that the investigation will be resolved in his favor soon.

While this development unfolds, Malley has been excluded from the ongoing Iran nuclear deal talks, despite his active role in working towards the release of detained Americans in Iran.

The Hill has reached out to the State Department for further comment.

Last year, department officials stated that their main focus was not on reviving the nuclear deal with Iran, which was terminated by former President Trump in 2018. This stance was taken amidst intensified protests between Iranian authorities and residents following the death of Mahsa Amini while in the custody of the country’s Morality Police.

Recently, Republican lawmakers cautioned the Biden administration about pursuing an agreement with Iran that would provide sanctions relief without obtaining Congress’s approval.
