Report: Trump Urged Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey to Reverse 2020 Election Results

In late 2020, President Donald Trump, facing dwindling prospects for a second term, exerted pressure on Arizona Governor Doug Ducey to obtain fabricated votes that could potentially sway the election results in his favor. This revelation comes from a report by The Washington Post, which cites three individuals familiar with their conversation. Similarly, Trump also employed a similar tactic against Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, where he explicitly ordered Kemp to “find” votes. This particular incident was recorded and is now the subject of ongoing criminal investigations.

Unlike the recording of Trump’s conversation with Kemp, Ducey did not record his call with the former president. The Post’s report sheds new light on the Trump camp’s efforts to overturn Joe Biden’s victory in Arizona. It was previously reported that Trump’s allies within the Republican Party were pressuring local election officials.

Furthermore, Trump attempted to use Vice President Mike Pence to coerce Ducey into altering the election results. However, the Post notes that Pence did contact Ducey but did not impose any pressure on him. Despite these efforts, Ducey remained unswayed. In a video from late November 2020, the governor was seen ignoring a call from Trump while he signed documents certifying the election results, which clearly showed Trump’s loss in the state of Arizona.

Following a fiercely contested race against pro-Trump candidate Kari Lake in 2022, Democrat Katie Hobbs replaced Ducey as Arizona’s governor.

Special counsel Jack Smith, tasked by the Justice Department with investigating Trump, has been examining potential wrongdoing in multiple states where Trump contested the results of the 2020 election. Last year, Smith’s office subpoenaed local election officials in Wisconsin, Michigan, Arizona, and Pennsylvania. Additionally, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger was recently contacted by Smith. It remains unclear whether Ducey has been in contact with Smith’s office.

Smith’s investigation into Trump’s mishandling of classified documents resulted in 37 criminal charges against the former president in early June. These charges could potentially lead to imprisonment for Trump, and there may be additional charges forthcoming.
