Report to the Office Now

According to a recent report highlighted by Fortune, many companies and their workers have found a “happy middle ground” when it comes to returning to the office post-pandemic. This so-called “truce” involves hybrid arrangements, where employees come into the office a few days a week and work remotely for the rest of the workweek. However, some companies like Google are still experiencing growing pains with this setup and have updated their hybrid policy in an effort to crack down on employees who flout their deals and “are consistently absent from the office.” The Washington Post notes that while Google has had its workers come into the office three days a week for over a year, those ignoring this mandate will start to see the effects in their performance evaluations and attendance will now be tracked via employees’ badges. While some companies, such as Verizon, Airbnb, and Spotify, are still sticking with more flexible arrangements, others like Amazon, Disney, Meta, and Twitter are increasingly pressuring employees to return to the office at least for part of the week. Despite Google’s current crack-down policy, some firms like Salesforce have chosen to adopt more unusual tactics, such as donating money to local charities for each day a staff member works in person between certain dates. While hybrid arrangements may work for some companies, employers remain adamant that the office is still a necessary nexus for innovation and collaboration. However, some workers will struggle with this transition, having come to appreciate the flexibility of remote work that was introduced during the pandemic.
