Report: OpenAI sets sights on $1 billion in sales this year for ChatGPT

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is poised to surpass $1 billion in revenue over the next year. The revolutionary chatbot has gained traction among businesses, leading to monthly revenue of over $80 million, according to a report. Since ChatGPT’s public release in November, OpenAI’s revenue has experienced significant growth. Despite incurring a loss of approximately $540 million in 2020 during the development of ChatGPT, the company has achieved remarkable success. Sources suggest that OpenAI had between 1 and 2 million subscribers paying $20 per month for ChatGPT as of March this year. It remains unclear how much of OpenAI’s revenue is derived from ChatGPT subscriptions, as the company also offers access to its API for developers to utilize its technology. OpenAI is on track to exceed $1 billion in annual revenue.

ChatGPT and similar chatbots have found various applications in the business sphere, from code writing to enhancing customer service. However, experts caution that this technology may cause significant disruption in the job market. The Post has reached out to OpenAI for comment, seeking their perspective on these concerns. ChatGPT, referred to as a “large language model,” has gained a massive following since its release. Its ability to generate human-like responses to diverse prompts has captivated the public. Concurrently, OpenAI has faced scrutiny from critics who raise concerns about the societal implications of this technology. Notably, a recent study by academics from the University of East Anglia revealed a “significant” bias towards liberal viewpoints in ChatGPT’s responses, favoring the Democratic Party and left-leaning leaders in other countries.

In February, ChatGPT declined a request to write a story about Hunter Biden in the style of the New York Post but agreed to do so in a manner aligned with left-leaning CNN. As reported by The Post, experts fear that ChatGPT and other AI technologies, like deepfake photos, may fuel the propagation of misinformation during the upcoming 2024 presidential election cycle. The success of ChatGPT has sparked competition among major tech companies to develop their own chatbots and more advanced AI tools. Google, for instance, has released its own chatbot called Bard, which has received mixed reviews.
