Report: Disney and Microsoft Twitter ads appear next to neo-Nazi propaganda

According to a report, Twitter is still housing neo-Nazi propaganda alongside ads from major companies as advertisers slowly return to the platform. Harvard Law School clinical instructor Alejandra Caraballo has observed an increase in ads since NBCUniversal’s advertising superstar Linda Yaccarino took the helm of Twitter. However, Caraballo also noticed that ads from mainstream firms like Disney and Microsoft were appearing next to neo-Nazi propaganda. Caraballo came across such content while following an anti-Black Lives Matter organization called White Lives Matter California for research purposes. She found that they had retweeted portions of the propaganda film “Europa: The Last Battle,” which promotes antisemitic themes. Caraballo reported this issue to Twitter and discovered that ads from companies like Adobe, Microsoft, and Disney were appearing alongside the film-related tweets. Despite a decrease in ad revenue due to concerns about chaos on the platform under Elon Musk’s leadership, Twitter continues to allow advertisers to purchase verified badges. Caraballo shared screenshots showing ads from various brands next to search results related to the film. Twitter has since restricted specific searches but has not moderated the actual content. Caraballo tested the platform further and found ads next to hateful content and slurs. The CEO of Twitter, Linda Yaccarino, did not report any major advertising firms pausing their marketing spend on the platform during her first investor call. Noteworthy brands have resumed advertising on Twitter recently, and Yaccarino stated that ad spending has increased in various advertiser categories. Caraballo expressed concern over advertisers supporting extremist content by resuming their campaigns on Twitter. She warns that Elon Musk’s moderation policies and the enforcement of those policies remain unchanged despite the transition in CEO powers.
