In a nighttime raid on Friday, suspected rebels launched an attack on a school located in a remote area near the border of Uganda and Congo. Tragically, this violent act resulted in the loss of 41 lives, including 38 students who were in their dormitories.
According to the local mayor, the attackers used firearms and machetes to kill their victims, with some students suffering burns beyond recognition. Additionally, one guard and two members of the local community lost their lives in the assault. The rebels also abducted six students and looted food from the school’s store.
The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a group known to launch attacks from eastern Congo, is believed to be responsible for this massacre. Initially, their target was a military base, but they later changed their plans to attack the boarding school for reasons that remain unclear.

Following a military assault, the ADF relocated to eastern Congo and has since formed connections with the Islamic State group.
Ugandan authorities have been committed to pursuing ADF militants even outside their own territory. In 2021, the country carried out joint air and artillery strikes against the group in Congo.
