Report: Apple to Utilize 3D Printing for Manufacturing the Next Apple Watch

Apple is experimenting with the use of 3D printers to manufacture the stainless steel chassis for its upcoming smartwatches, according to a report from Bloomberg. This new technology is expected to be initially tested in the production of the Apple Watch 9, and if successful, will be implemented in the manufacturing process of future products. The current method of crafting the Apple Watch chassis involves cutting slabs of metal into the desired shape. By adopting 3D printing, Apple aims to reduce production time and material waste. Additionally, Apple plans to utilize the 3D printing process for the next version of the titanium-encased Apple Watch Ultra, although the company has encountered difficulties in mass-producing 3D-printed aluminum enclosures for its Mac and iPad lineup. In line with its commitment to sustainability, Apple aims to source recycled aluminum or steel for its enclosures, a goal first set in 2017 and reaffirmed in 2022. Notably, the use of recycled aluminum has already become commonplace for Apple, with 59% of all aluminum used in its products in 2021 coming from recycled sources. Some products even boast enclosures made entirely from recycled aluminum. As Apple continues to innovate, it is worth watching how the introduction of 3D printing technology will shape the future of its smartwatch production.
