Rep. Jim Jordan demands Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s compliance in sharing Threads content moderation data

The House Judiciary Committee, led by the GOP, is requesting Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to provide the moderation policy for his new app, known as the “Twitter killer.” This request comes as the committee investigates the alleged pressure on Big Tech by the Biden administration to censor political dissent. In a letter sent on Monday, House Judiciary Chair Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) informed Zuckerberg that Threads, the new app, will not be immune to the investigation that was launched earlier this year against other tech companies like Amazon, Apple, Google, and Microsoft.

Jordan stated that Threads raises serious concerns as it has been marketed as a competitor to Elon Musk’s Twitter, which has faced political persecution from the Biden Administration due to Musk’s commitment to free speech. He pointed to the recent move by the Federal Trade Commission, which required Twitter to disclose internal communications as part of an investigation into its ability to protect consumer information adequately.

A federal judge recently issued an order blocking Biden administration officials from contacting social media companies, citing concerns of government censorship and suppression of online content. The judge determined that the White House likely colluded with Big Tech to censor protected speech during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The House Judiciary Committee has gathered additional evidence showing that the federal government has coerced or colluded with technology and social media companies to moderate online content. Jordan expressed serious concerns about whether the Executive Branch is engaging in censorship through proxies, using surrogates to censor or suppress speech in a manner that the government itself cannot do.

Threads, which has already accumulated over 150 million users since its launch this month, is facing accusations of censoring conservative voices, including Donald Trump Jr. Additionally, Meta-owned Facebook has previously blocked The Post from sharing coverage of Hunter Biden’s laptop and banned former President Donald Trump after the Jan. 6 riots.

The committee is concerned about potential violations of the First Amendment that may have occurred or could occur on the Threads platform due to Meta’s track record of censoring protected speech at the behest of government agencies. Reports suggest that Threads is already engaging in censorship, including censoring users without providing grounds for appeal.

In the past, Zuckerberg admitted that Facebook made a mistake by banning the sharing of The Post’s exclusive report on Hunter Biden’s laptop before the 2020 election. He explained that Facebook limited sharing of the story, but did not entirely halt it, after the FBI warned Meta employees about potential Russian propaganda. More than 50 former senior intelligence officials have signed a letter claiming that the laptop story exhibits characteristics of a Russian information operation.
