Rep. Grace Napolitano to Retire After Long Political Career; LA-Area Democrat at 86 Years Old

Representative Grace Napolitano, a Democrat from El Monte, has announced her retirement at the age of 86. After serving in Congress for 24 years and having a successful career in local and state politics, Napolitano made the announcement during the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Grace F. Napolitano Nature Education Center in La Puente.

In her speech, Napolitano expressed her gratitude to the people of the San Gabriel Valley and Southeastern Los Angeles County for their trust in her over the past quarter century. She emphasized her commitment to representing her district and acknowledged the region’s growth and its residents’ desire for a high-quality community, which has made it a popular place to live.

Napolitano highlighted her accomplishments during her tenure, including the Gold Line project, numerous highway-rail grade separation and grade crossing improvement projects, and her involvement in mental health and water recycling initiatives. She also expressed gratitude to her staff, family, and political supporters who have contributed to her successful career.

Napolitano assured that she will continue to work tirelessly for the San Gabriel Valley until the end of her term in 2024. She concluded her speech by expressing her appreciation for the honor of serving and thanking everyone in attendance.

Napolitano received praise from her colleague, Representative Judy Chu, who commended her commitment to fighting for her constituents and their access to clean drinking water. Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn also lauded Napolitano’s dedication to water-related issues and her compassionate leadership.

Napolitano’s retirement creates an open seat in the predominantly Democratic district, leading to a competitive race among candidates such as State Senator Bob Archuleta, Mary Ann Lutz, and Ricardo Vazques.

Napolitano has endorsed Bob Archuleta, citing their longstanding relationship and his track record of serving the community with passion and excellence.
