Roy declared that he would not support any funding for the DHS or DOJ through a continuing resolution unless there are tangible changes implemented. He highlighted his desire for a secure border and for the DOJ to uphold the rule of law. Quoting James Madison, he stressed the power of the purse as the most effective weapon against an overbearing executive branch.
Furthermore, when questioned about the recent downgrade of the U.S. credit rating by Fitch rating agency, Roy criticized the reckless spending of the government. He argued that taxpayer funds were being allocated to bureaucracies that do not align with the sentiments of the American people. According to Roy, the DHS fails to secure the homeland, the DOJ neglects to enforce the rule of law, and the Department of Defense (DOD) prioritizes woke ideologies over defending the country. He proposed scaling back spending to pre-COVID-19 levels as a means of restoring the U.S. credit rating.
To accomplish this, Roy aims to limit September spending to $1.471 trillion, equivalent to 2022 levels, and subsequently implement fiscally responsible practices. Additionally, Roy vocalized his opposition to the DOJ’s utilization as a tool to target former President Donald Trump, referring to the investigation surrounding his handling of classified information. He criticized his Democratic colleagues for politically orchestrating the novel legal theory of defrauding to pursue both former and current presidents.
Overall, Roy contends that congressional control over funding offers a powerful mechanism for reform and urges his fellow representatives to wield this authority to enact meaningful change within the DOJ and DHS.
