Jane Birkin, the iconic British-born actor and singer, passed away at the age of 76 in Paris. Birkin captivated the French audience with her unique and androgynous style, which gained popularity through her collaborations with the late singer and songwriter Serge Gainsbourg. While the duo’s provocative 1969 song “Je t’aime… moi non plus” became notorious, Birkin went on to release her own albums and achieve success in film roles and live performances, particularly in France.

France’s culture ministry acknowledged Birkin’s death and praised her collaborations with prominent figures in French film and music, including singer Étienne Daho and the late director Agnès Varda. Describing her as a “timeless francophone icon,” the ministry honored her contributions to the arts.

Prime minister Élisabeth Borne remarked on Twitter that Birkin was “unforgettable, with a unique voice and charm.”
