Renowned Scientist Who Unveiled Whales’ Singing Abilities Passes Away at 88

Scientist Roger Payne Passes Away, Leaving Behind a Legacy of Environmental Conservation

Roger Payne, the visionary scientist who revolutionized the field of environmental conservation with his groundbreaking discovery that whales possess the ability to sing, has sadly passed away at the age of 88.

Payne made this groundbreaking discovery during a research expedition to Bermuda in 1967. A Navy engineer provided him with a recording of enigmatic underwater sounds that had been captured while listening for Russian submarines. Payne astutely determined that these mesmerizing tones were actually the songs that whales use to communicate with each other.

Recognizing the immense potential of this discovery, Payne took the opportunity to raise awareness and galvanize global efforts to save these majestic creatures, who were rapidly vanishing from the face of the Earth. In 1970, he released the album “Songs of the Humpback Whale,” which became an unexpected sensation and sparked a worldwide movement to halt commercial whale hunting and prevent whale extinction.

From the very beginning, Payne understood that whale songs could serve as a catalyst for public interest in protecting a species that had long been viewed merely as a resource or an oddity. In a 2021 interview with Nautilus Quarterly, he recounted how he first heard the recording amidst the deafening noise of a research vessel’s engine room and immediately recognized it as the haunting melody of whales.

“Despite the cacophony, what I heard completely astounded me. It was evident that here, at last, was an opportunity to capture the world’s attention and prevent the irreversible loss of whales,” he shared with the magazine.

Sadly, Payne succumbed to pelvic cancer on Saturday. He resided in the tranquil town of South Woodstock, Vermont, with his beloved wife, the talented actress Lisa Harrow. Funeral arrangements are forthcoming, according to Harrow.

During his previous marriage to zoologist Katy Payne, with whom he worked closely, Payne had four children. Through their collaboration in the late 1960s, the couple utilized primitive equipment to record the captivating sounds of humpback whales, who gracefully serenade for prolonged periods, sometimes exceeding half an hour.

The discovery of whale songs had a profound impact on the burgeoning environmental movement. Many anti-war activists redirected their efforts toward safeguarding animals and the environment, and the phrase “save the whales” became an ever-present slogan adorning tote bags and bumper stickers.

Whale songs permeated popular culture, featuring in various forms such as a 1971 episode of “The Partridge Family” and a 1979 issue of National Geographic that included a flexi disc featuring excerpts from “Songs of the Humpback Whale.” To this day, it remains the highest-selling environmental album in history.

Pioneering the cause of whale protection, Payne established Ocean Alliance in 1971. This organization, headquartered in Gloucester, Massachusetts, has played a pivotal role in pivotal moments for whale preservation, including the 1972 passage of the Marine Mammal Protection Act by the U.S. Congress and the 1982 commercial whaling moratorium enacted by the International Whaling Commission.

The passing of Payne is an immense loss for the field of environmental conservation, affirms Iain Kerr, CEO of Ocean Alliance and a longtime collaborator of Payne’s. It was two years ago that Payne decided to retire.

“His magnetic presence and ability to connect with individuals inspired countless individuals to dedicate their lives to protecting whales and our planet Earth,” stated Kerr.

Payne, initially from New York City, pursued his education at Harvard University and later Cornell University, where he obtained his doctorate. As a biologist, he began his career by delving into the behavioral patterns of bats and birds.
