Renowned Iranian Filmmaker Tragically Stabbed to Death: An Unforgettable Loss

A renowned Iranian filmmaker, Dariush Mehrjui, considered one of the pioneers of Iranian cinema, was tragically killed along with his wife, Vahideh Mohammadifar, in their home near Tehran, according to a report by AFP. The incident occurred on Saturday night, when Mehrjui texted his daughter to come over for dinner. Unfortunately, when she arrived 90 minutes later, she discovered their lifeless bodies. The motive behind the murder is still unclear, although it is reported that their house had been burgled and they had received threats. The police have identified four suspects, as reported by the BBC.

The 83-year-old Mehrjui, an influential figure in Iran’s new wave cinema, which prioritizes realism, had a prolific career. One of his notable films, The Cow, released in 1969, examines a villager’s unusual fixation on the animal. Other notable works include Hamoun, The Pear Tree, and Leila. An underlying political element is present in his films, as Mehrjui once remarked that everything is political. Iranian culture minister Mohammad-Mehdi Esmaili paid tribute to Mehrjui, describing him as a pioneer of Iranian cinema and the creator of timeless masterpieces. (Read more Iran stories.)
