In the midst of an ongoing strike against Hollywood producers, the Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists have re-elected Fran Drescher as union President and Joely Fisher as Secretary-Treasurer.
Both executives have started new two-year terms, according to the union.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to continue serving as president of our union,” said Drescher. “These are challenging times, but united as one, we will navigate through the difficulties, uphold our principles, and ensure the recognition of our significant contributions to this collaborative art form. We will not allow our contributions to be undervalued, but rather celebrated.”
Drescher also expressed her commitment to equality and fighting against marginalization and discrimination within the union and the industry at large. She emphasized the importance of equal opportunities for all members.
“Together, we will overcome partisanship and foster a culture of respect, patience, and understanding,” Drescher added. “Our decisions will be driven by wisdom, not politics. While we have achieved a great deal in the past two years, I am optimistic that the next two years will be even more successful. As we let go of divisions and embrace empathy, we will enter a golden age for SAG-AFTRA.”
The union reported that 23,080 ballots were cast in the national officers election, with Drescher receiving the majority of votes. Maya Gilbert-Dunbar received 5,276 votes.
In the secretary-treasurer election, Fisher received 19,777 votes, while Peter Antico received 8,361 votes.
The strikes by the Writers Guild of America since May and SAG-AFTRA since July have brought film and television production to a standstill, with no resolution in sight.
The studios last met with the WGA on August 22, but there have been no known contract talks between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
Both unions are striking for similar reasons, including fair compensation for streamed content and safeguards against the use of artificial intelligence.
