Remembering Smash Mouth’s Steve Harwell: Legendary Frontman Passes Away at 56

LOS ANGELES (AP) – The music world has lost one of its shining stars. Steve Harwell, the vibrant and charismatic frontman of the Grammy-nominated pop rock band Smash Mouth, has tragically passed away at the age of 56.

According to the band’s manager, Robert Hayes, Harwell peacefully departed this world on Monday morning at his residence in Boise, Idaho. Surrounded by loved ones, Harwell succumbed to acute liver failure, as announced by Hayes in a heartfelt statement.

Smash Mouth soared to fame with its chart-topping hits, including the iconic anthems “All Star” and “Then The Morning Comes.”

Hayes paid tribute to Harwell, referring to him as a “true American Original” and praising his unwavering dedication to achieving pop stardom. The manager reflected on Harwell’s larger-than-life character, comparing it to a Roman candle shooting up into the sky.

Born in California in 1967, Harwell began his musical journey as part of the rap group F.O.S. (Freedom of Speech) before joining forces with Smash Mouth in 1994. The band achieved immense success with their platinum albums “Fush Yu Mang” (1997) and “Astro Lounge” (1999), which showcased their distinctive ska-infused sound. Among the many highlights of the latter album was their Grammy-nominated, platinum single “All Star,” which gained even more popularity after being featured in the animated film “Shrek.”

Humor played a pivotal role in Smash Mouth’s rise to prominence, with Harwell’s playful alt-rock voice and persona captivating audiences. His talents extended beyond music as he made a memorable cameo in the 2001 comedy film “Rat Race” and forged a well-documented friendship with Food Network chef and host Guy Fieri.

Hayes emphasized Harwell’s remarkable qualities, describing him as an individual fueled by irrepressible charm, charisma, and fearless ambition. He lived a life of unyielding passion and intensity, shining brilliantly across the universe before ultimately burning out.

Harwell’s departure will undoubtedly leave a tremendous void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished forever.

In 2021, Harwell made the difficult decision to part ways with Smash Mouth due to his battle with cardiomyopathy, a condition he had been diagnosed with eight years earlier. Despite facing numerous serious setbacks, including heart failure and acute Wernicke Encephalopathy, Harwell continued to inspire fans with his indomitable spirit. The band carried on with Zach Goode as the lead vocalist.

On Sunday, Hayes had announced that Harwell was under hospice care. Plans have been made to cremate Harwell in Boise and lay him to rest beside his mother in San Jose, California.
