Actress Phyllis Coates, the first Lois Lane on TV’s “Adventures of Superman,” starring George Reeves, has passed away.
Her daughter, Laura Press, confirmed that Coates died of natural causes at the Motion Picture & Television Country House & Hospital in Woodland Hills.
Years later after her portrayal as the fearless reporter on “Adventures of Superman,” Coates returned to play Lois Lane’s mother in an episode of “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” in 1994, alongside Teri Hatcher. Hatcher expressed in a statement, “I’m sure she was aware of how much the fans would enjoy that inside nod to her work on the original TV series.”
During the same year, in an interview with “The Los Angeles Times,” Coates revealed, “My makeup man was Harry Thomas, who made up every monster in Hollywood.”
She left the show after the first season when she received an offer to film a pilot, which unfortunately didn’t become a series.
Coates, originally born as Gypsie Ann Stell in Wichita Falls, Texas, in 1927, moved to Los Angeles after graduating from high school and became a chorus girl in Earl Carroll’s productions. She toured Europe as part of the USO and signed a contract with Warner Bros. in 1948.
Coates’ credits include starring opposite George O’Hanlon in Warner Bros.’ long-running series of comedic shorts featuring Joe McDoakes. She also appeared in films such as “Panther Girl of the Kongo” and “I Was a Teenage Frankenstein,” and made guest appearances on popular TV shows like “Gunsmoke,” “Perry Mason,” “Rawhide,” and “Leave it to Beaver.”
Coates was married and divorced four times. She is survived by her second daughter, Zoe, and a granddaughter, Olivia.
