Remembering KOMO 4 Icon Steve Pool: A Tribute to a Legend and His Battle with Early Onset Alzheimer’s

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Steve Pool, a beloved figure at KOMO 4. Steve passed away this week, surrounded by his family and friends.

He had been battling early-onset Alzheimer’s and succumbed on Nov. 21, at the age of 70, as confirmed by his family.

Steve was a trailblazing figure in Seattle broadcasting, and he made significant contributions as KOMO 4’s weatherman and a frequent host of charitable events. His journey with KOMO 4 began as an intern while he was still a student at the University of Washington back in 1974.

Shortly after graduating, Steve joined KOMO 4 full-time in 1977 and never looked back.

He took on various roles at KOMO 4, starting with sports and hard news reporting before eventually becoming the station’s chief weather forecaster in 1984, a role he excelled in. Steve’s talent even caught the attention of ABC’s Good Morning America, where he was called upon to fill in over 70 times. Additionally, he graced the cover of Seattle Magazine twice and was repeatedly recognized as the best weatherman by readers in the “Best of Seattle” awards. Steve also received accolades from Seattle Weekly and Esquire Magazine, showcasing his exceptional skill and popularity.

Beyond his work on-screen, Steve was actively involved in charitable efforts and later hosted KOMO 4’s Miracle Network for Children’s Hospital. His personal achievements include seven Emmy awards, a Sigma Delta Chi Society of Professional Journalism award, medals from the New York International Film Festival, and recognition from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences American Scene Award, among others. Notably, he was part of the news team that won the esteemed Edward R. Murrow Award for the best newscast in America in 2001 and 2007. These accomplishments led to his induction into the University of Washington Communications Hall of Fame in 2004.

After an illustrious 42-year career, Steve retired from television in 2019. His farewell show was filled with gratitude and introspection. Speaking from the heart, Steve expressed his pride in the success he achieved in his career and the immense support he received.

Even in retirement, Steve’s influence continued. He conceived the idea for the documentary How Seattle Changed The World, which premiered on KOMO 4 in February 2023. This documentary was dedicated to Steve Pool and showcased the transformative impact of Seattle-based innovations on a global scale.

To many, Steve was not just a familiar face on television, but someone who left a lasting impression. The outpouring of memories and gratitude from KOMO 4 viewers, colleagues, and even interns in the weather center attests to the impact he had on many lives.

Reflecting on his legacy, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell shared his condolences for the Pool family, honoring Steve as a “news legend and pioneer.” His heartfelt message recognized Steve’s professional excellence and the enduring impact of his contributions.

A Seattle news legend and pioneer, Steve Pool was kind and authentic – he epitomized professionalism. I join in mourning his passing and send my heartfelt condolences to his family. Steve’s legacy will live on through the people and causes he supported.

As much as Steve cherished his career, his family was the source of his greatest pride. He is survived by his wife Michelle, and his daughters Lindsey and Marissa.
