Regretting My Silence: Wishing I Had Spoken Up

James Cameron, the renowned filmmaker and deep-sea explorer, expressed his regret for not speaking up more about his concerns regarding the OceanGate vessel, which tragically went missing. In an interview with Reuters, Cameron admitted that he should have been more vocal, but he was unaware that the vessel was not certified due to his lack of focus on the matter.

Cameron revealed that Stockton Rush, one of the co-founders of OceanGate who died in the underwater implosion, had asked him to join a dive to the Titanic wreck this season. However, Cameron declined the offer as he had participated in more than 30 expeditions to the shipwreck already. He acknowledged that he had heard concerns from others about the submersible not being certified by a third party, a concern he also shared. Cameron described it as “unconscionable” to reject a rigorous certification process for a vessel that carries passengers.

In discussing the flaws of the Titan submersible with the New York Times, Cameron highlighted that it was constructed using carbon-fiber composites instead of steel or titanium, rendering it weak in compression. He admitted to Reuters that he wished he had spoken up and emphasized that he assumed someone else was smarter than him. Drawing a parallel to the Titanic tragedy, Cameron pointed out that warnings were ignored, just like the captain of the Titanic disregarded the red flags about ice in the waters ahead.

Guillermo Sohnlein, the other co-founder of OceanGate, pushed back against the criticisms from Cameron and others. He stressed that although Cameron and other experts did not participate in the design, engineering, and building of the submersible, they should acknowledge the rigorous test program it underwent. Sohnlein considered the incident a tragic loss for the ocean exploration community but emphasized that implosions are always a risk in deep waters and can occur at any moment.

Ultimately, Cameron lamented that no amount of analysis after the fact could bring back the five individuals who lost their lives. He concluded by stating that now one wreck lies next to another for the same reason.
