Rediscover the Majestic Roman ‘Power Palace’ as it Reopens after 50 Years

An ancient Roman imperial palazzo atop the city’s Palatine Hill has reopened to tourists after almost 50 years of restoration. The Domus Tiberiana, a sprawling palace that was home to rulers in ancient Rome, offers sweeping views of the Roman Forum. Following decades of structural restoration work, the public can now explore the palace, which has also yielded a rich collection of artifacts from centuries of Roman life.

The director of the Colosseum Archeological Park, which includes the Palatine Hill, has described the restored palazzo as “the power palace par excellence.” The domus, named after Tiberius, shows foundations dating back to the time of Nero, shortly after the AD64 fire that destroyed much of the city. Once abandoned for centuries, the residence was later developed by the Farnese noble family in the 1500s.

The reopening of the palazzo allows visitors to trace the footsteps of ancient emperors and their courts on the way to the domus. The term “palatial” is inspired by the luxurious imperial residence on the Palatine Hill, one of Rome’s seven hills. This domus, built on the northwest slope of the hill, is considered the first true imperial palace. In addition to the emperor’s residence, the complex included gardens, worship areas, quarters for the Praetorian Guard, and a service district for workers overlooking the Roman Forum.
