Reddit CEO Steve Huffman criticizes moderators during blackout, drawing comparisons to aristocracy

Commenting on the recent blackout of several parts of Reddit by unpaid volunteer moderators, CEO Steve Huffman compared these individuals to wealthy land barons and criticized their lack of accountability. The blackout protest began in response to Reddit’s plans to charge money for third-party apps to access its data, leading to the shutdown of popular apps like Apollo, Reddit is Fun, and Sync. However, Huffman dismissed concerns about the protest, stating that it would pass like previous issues on Reddit. He also expressed his desire to change site policies to make it easier for subreddit users to remove moderators. Huffman further stated that the protests did not represent the wider Reddit community, as the majority of communities remained open. The group of moderators leading the blackout criticized Reddit’s poor communication and insufficient notice regarding the pricing changes. Some moderators indicated that their subreddits would remain blacked out indefinitely until Reddit found a more satisfactory solution. Huffman defended Reddit’s decision, stating that the company could not subsidize the business of running competitive apps for free. The blackout poses potential challenges for Reddit as it has faced recent devaluation and criticism. Despite the turmoil, Huffman sees the blackout as an opportunity for Reddit to mature as a company. The duration of the blackout is still unknown, as more than 300 subreddits have committed to remaining inaccessible until a satisfactory resolution is reached.
