Record-Breaking Sale: Connecticut Mansion Recently Sold for $138.8M

According to press releases from real estate brokerages involved in the sale, the most expensive home in Connecticut has just been sold for a staggering $138.8 million. Situated in the affluent town of Greenwich, this property now holds the record for the highest residential sale price in the state’s history and ranks among the most expensive properties currently being sold in the nation, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. The identity of the wealthy buyer has not been disclosed at this time. It’s worth noting that this property has broken sales records in the past. Back in 2014, it sold for an impressive $120 million, a figure that set the record for the highest-priced home sale in the entire United States at the time.

This remarkable estate is known as Copper Beech Farm and sits on a vast 50-plus-acre waterfront property that spans nearly a mile. The listing price for the property was initially set at $150 million when it was listed in February. Located on a private peninsula elevated 40 feet above the water, the estate commands captivating views of the Long Island Sound. The main house, characterized by its wood-paneled foyer and grand entertainment room, is complemented by various other buildings on the property, including a carriage house, gatehouse, pool house, and two greenhouses. The main residence, originally constructed in 1898, is a sprawling structure spanning over 13,500 square feet, boasting eight bedrooms and eight bathrooms. Over the years, the home has undergone meticulous restoration.

Described as the “last Greenwich great estate,” Copper Beech Farm is accessed through a long driveway lined with cobblestone and an enchanting allée of trees. The interior of the residence exudes Victorian-inspired elegance, evident in its French Renaissance-style stone towers and aristocratic refinement. The estate’s interiors are adorned with original museum-quality appointments, such as oak paneling, plaster friezes, numerous fireplaces, and impressively high 12-foot ceilings in the main rooms.

The listing for the property was managed by Leslie McElwreath, Joseph Barbieri, and Nikki Field of Sotheby’s International Realty, while the buyer was represented by Stephanie Bo Li of Douglas Elliman. Reflecting on the sale, McElwreath commented, “Copper Beech Farm is the crown jewel of the Greenwich coastline. It is an awe-inspiring compound, complete with every conceivable luxury for a sophisticated live, work, and play retreat.” Barbieri added, “The opportunity to purchase a residence of this high caliber is a true rarity. It was our honor to represent such an unparalleled, historic estate in one of the most coveted markets.”
