The Powerball drawing set for Saturday evening is expected to offer the ninth-largest lottery jackpot in the history of the United States, with an estimated value of $960 million, as reported by the Multi-State Lottery Association, the organization overseeing the game.
No winning tickets matching all six numbers have been sold since July 19, when a ticket worth $1.08 billion was purchased at a mini-market in downtown Los Angeles, ranking as the seventh-largest jackpot in U.S. history. As a result, there have been 30 consecutive drawings without a grand prize winner.
This Saturday’s jackpot stands as the fourth-largest in the game’s history since its establishment in 1992. Nonetheless, there have been five Mega Millions drawings with even greater jackpots.
The odds of matching all five numbers along with the Powerball number are 1 in 292.2 million, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association. The overall chance of winning any prize is 1 in 24.9.
Ticket sales will conclude at 7 p.m., and the drawing will take place at 7:59 p.m.
The Powerball game is available in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
USC mathematics professor Ken Alexander states that buying tickets from a store where big jackpot winners have emerged in the past does not increase the chances of winning a jackpot.
“The likelihood of a particular venue selling a winning lottery ticket is solely determined by the number of tickets they sell,” Alexander informed City News Service.
However, if players want to improve their chances of keeping the entire jackpot to themselves, Alexander advises selecting numbers that are less frequently chosen. Many individuals rely on their birth dates when selecting numbers, therefore choosing numbers higher than 31 decreases the likelihood of duplication, Alexander explained.
